Thank you for clarifying that this movie does not have it; I had thought that was what it was trying to do and was terribly disappointed as a result.

My guess is that if you asked American colonists where the greatest number of atrocities were committed during the war they would point you to the Western theater fought against British-allied Indians, where massacres (admittedly on both sides) appear to have been common.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7201660899514011402.post-1726498980777908042019-07-31T00:41:49.658-05:002019-07-31T00:41:49.658-05:00This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.Marketing (SEO)https://www.blogger.com/profile/15767316528269159964noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7201660899514011402.post-66607457411344318992017-08-20T21:59:27.693-05:002017-08-20T21:59:27.693-05:00The British undoubtedly committed atrocities throu...The British undoubtedly committed atrocities throughout their colonial efforts, but nothing like the church burning occurred in America. Just as whoever put the scene in the film may have had another agenda too.

The fact is that the British, as colonialists, DID IN REALITY do things every bit as awful as that fictional scene. And the writer may well have been aware that a little over a century earlier, in Drogheda, Oliver Cromwell had set fire to a church, in which he burned about 30 people. Furthermore, he reported the event to Parliament in detail in terms that seem very like gloating.

The British military often killed women and children when in punitive drives. Some of Cromwell's soldiers did so in Ireland (as well as sending survivors to Virginia and Barbados as slaves) and they did so many times in other countries they invaded. All the colonialist military did that at some point but some did it more often.Diarmuidhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02344265121545227150noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7201660899514011402.post-28924500498635210712017-04-30T10:42:20.486-05:002017-04-30T10:42:20.486-05:00Well written piece and I thank you. I would respectfully recommend books such as "Black Masters: A Free Family of Color in the Old South" by Michael P. Johnson and James L. Roark, a scholarly book based in part on a treasure trove of family documents found by children in the early 20th Century in a trunk under a surviving antebellum mansion in South Carolina. The book has an excellent bibligraphy and looks carefully at the issue of free black peoples in the South from well before, through and after the Civil War. Thank you again for your piece. I shall look at your analysis more frequently. By the way the presence of rifles and rifled pistols in 1776 was not unknown, but I heartily agree that even modern pistols do not have the accuracy or controllability you see portrayed in film. Tavington's shot from the bridge was a really extreme example. Best regard. Agreed the exaggeration of weapon accuracy and reloading can be excused. But the church burning scene just felt piled on. I simply had to assume it actually happened, and just to deal with it. But to know that it was added as hollywood fluff? Just.. wow. And the fact that Tavington (Tarleton) actually lives is laughably awful information. I was also left wondering where the heck the big battle took place (Martin versus Tavington with thousands of their friends, lol thats great.) But srsly. Are either of the battles u mentioned related to Camden? I thought it was Camden. Anyway, great review.
