It was conquest. It is hard to argue there was an equivalence here.War Movie Buffhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05999735218343872013noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7201660899514011402.post-57969721261059355042020-01-13T13:10:55.405-06:002020-01-13T13:10:55.405-06:00The movie feels more like historical fiction than ...The movie feels more like historical fiction than history but I enjoy its broad-brush depiction of life in a frontier army fort (it's a popular setting for movies and the ones I have seen have tended to be a cut above the average western so it may just be naturally congenial to action stories). The film depicts the loneliness, harsh conditions and discipline, and constant underlying danger that soldiers faced, but also shows them having fun. I particularly enjoyed seeing the perspective of the few women at the outpost (I remember reading in Time-Life book on the frontier army that officer's wives had trouble keeping female servants because the soldiers would marry them shortly after they arrived from the East, prompting them to look to their own households. One fort made a point of asking for especially homely serving-women but the lonely soldiers married them anyway).

I would quibble about the statement that the Indians were only fighting back against encroachment by Americans. Many American Indian tribes were sometime raiders, as all human societies tend to be when there is opportunity and they are not somehow restrained from the practice. I'm not saying that Americans didn't do a lot to stir things up but even if that hadn't happened there would have been raids and feuds probably requiring the presence of an army fort. Romance doesn't work in Yellow Ribbon. John Ford does fine work with action scenes - here with the Indians chasing after Sgt. Tyree and the stampede of Indian horses courtesy of Capt. Brittles.
