Eddie Little Sky or Jay Silverhills may have pulled it off but I doubt it. It was certainly no worse than Chuck Connors playing Geronimo, or Jeff Chandler playing Cochise, or Manou Tapou, a Polynesian, playing a Lakota Chief in "A man called Horse". A few years ago I was watching an old episode of the TV show "Hondo", c. 1967. There on the screen was Al Pacino playing an Apache warrior! Of course the Academy Award recipient for the ("Best Out Of Ethnic Character category") would undoubtedly have to be John Wayne playing Genghis Khan!<br />It's hard for many people born after about 1970 to believe but whites playing Native Americans was the norm years ago, more out of necessity than discrimination. It would be unthinkable today, OF COURSE. My dad and my uncle were extras in the film. My mom and dad went to a cast party at Tomichi Village. Ricardo Montalban kissed my mom's hand when she was introduced to him. Sal Mineo was an asshole, she said. My dad struck up a friendship with Bing Russell (Kurt's dad). Bing came out elk hunting with my dad the next year. I remember him chewing Kurt's ass over the phone over Kurt's grades. Bing gave me a toy aircraft carrier for my birthday. My mom had to get on Bing in the grocery store because of his profanity laced language. It's what makes America great - our ability to be ashamed (decades later). I doubt Germans care much about Jewish culture.warmoviebuffnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7201660899514011402.post-58518988355708181452011-06-04T10:21:50.410-05:002011-06-04T10:21:50.410-05:00Who would expect Americans to be well-versed in Pl...Who would expect Americans to be well-versed in Plains Indian's culture?allaboutwarmovieshttp://allaboutwarmovies.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7201660899514011402.post-36283853085361558992011-06-04T10:11:55.477-05:002011-06-04T10:11:55.477-05:00I apologize for being condescending, but who would...I apologize for being condescending, but who would expect a European to be well-versed on Plains Indians' culture?warmoviebuffnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7201660899514011402.post-10783571960915257372011-06-04T02:06:06.615-05:002011-06-04T02:06:06.615-05:00Why anonymous? Started to learn Lakota Sioux a while back. (Didn't get very far though) There is some hope I would understand the book. :)allaboutwarmovieshttp://allaboutwarmovies.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7201660899514011402.post-73052814696503847582011-06-02T15:45:22.354-05:002011-06-02T15:45:22.354-05:00I am having trouble commenting on my own posts. It is not well written in a conventional sense and the Indians were not exactly known for the lyricism. Also, if you are not already familiar with Indian culture it could be a slog in spots. It is not a quick read. You have to concentrate on each sentence.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7201660899514011402.post-54199915606320731692011-06-02T04:09:46.352-05:002011-06-02T04:09:46.352-05:00I read a few good reviews about books by Mari Sand...I read a few good reviews about books by Mari Sandoz and although I'm not a reader of westerns this seems like a book that I need at least to put on a wish list. I doesn't seem like the typical western anyway. I have a feeling I will definitely stay away from the movie.allaboutwarmovieshttp://allaboutwarmovies.comnoreply@blogger.com
