They are more about prewar/wartime/postwar intrigue or espionage, so they are only sorta-kinda war movies. But they have as much right to be on a war movie list as "The Third Man" or "Notorious."Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7201660899514011402.post-63319323311350971202010-11-18T21:53:38.449-06:002010-11-18T21:53:38.449-06:00As far as Bogart war movies, he made "Action ...As far as Bogart war movies, he made "Action in the North Atlantic" about the merchant marine, "Battle Circus" about a Korean War MASH unit, "The Caine Mutiny", "African Queen", and "Casablanca".War Movie Buffhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05999735218343872013noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7201660899514011402.post-1167724160762202002010-11-18T21:45:08.123-06:002010-11-18T21:45:08.123-06:00The deaths are pretty graphic if you do not insist...The deaths are pretty graphic if you do not insist on blood being involved. I don't think of "Midnight Clear" when I think of "Sahara". "Sahara" reminds me more of numerous Westerns where the good guys are surrounded by Indians.
Speaking of "Midnight Clear", it is an example of a modern war movie that is better than many of the classics, including Sahara. It certainly belongs in the Top 100, but I think Sahara might make it, too.War Movie Buffhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05999735218343872013noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7201660899514011402.post-5476232249125896712010-11-17T23:08:12.912-06:002010-11-17T23:08:12.912-06:00This does seem decent. I must admit I prefer to watch newer movies these days or watch the British movies of the time. My father having been in Algeria I heard so much about combat in the desert I would probably be able to relate to this. And I always liked Bogart as well. Was he in many war movies? I can't remember. (Casablanca being rather war time/romance). Without Bogie it wouldnt be near as interesting. i like the ragtag bunch of soldiers holding out against an army idea and the value of precious water in the desert idea. you know i looked it up and Sahara and Five Graves were both made in 1943. They have a very similar look if not plot and both have the expected patriotic touches toward the end that seem hocky today but were important for their time.
I thought this was a very gritty war pic for its time. The various deaths are pretty graphic.
Its interesting to compare this one to A Midnight Clear to see soldiers in isolated setting in very different climates. Also how attitudes change with time. MC is listed as an "antiwar" pic while S is not even though it sure doesnt glorify war.JHardyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12975399049775935074noreply@blogger.com
