Too long & didn't make any sense. It seemed to have nothing to do with the film, other than to maybe say "We had girls in the movie". I might have could have understand a scene where there's interaction with German civilians, but this just seemed to me to be totally unnecessary, & way, way to long.
Ditto to what other reviewers stated about the German tactics near the end of the film. 1 Sherman fighting against a company of Waffen SS troops @ night? I'm sure that combat tactics almost always need to be simplified to some degree in movie adaptations, but too much simplification destroys suspension of disbelief. I also like war movies where the enemy is shown making competent choices to the very end, but for some reason this seems to be very hard for directors to achieve.

I do like the tense atmosphere of the movie and the way that people's attitudes are shaped by the stresses of war. There is a brief scene where a massive fleet of allied aircraft is opposed by a few desperate German planes. The shot invites us to feel some sympathy for the few fighting hopelessly against many, but Sgt. Collier only sees a strong blow thrown against a still-dangerous foe and cheers it on. It's the appropriate attitude and we understand it more through Norman's eyes as we enter a world where danger is everywhere and hesitation can put your fellow soldiers in danger. Less appropriate is Collier's treatment of German civilians and the "spoils of war." Is that also a product of combat stress or is it mere wickedness running free under convenient circumstances? It's been a while since I saw the movie so I may be misremembering some of these scenes, but I found Norman's struggle to make good decisions in enemy fire and under a charismatic but morally ambiguous commander.
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7201660899514011402.post-88841638853197676012016-12-28T20:06:13.945-06:002016-12-28T20:06:13.945-06:00I can not defend my grade. The points you make are some of my problems with the film. The execution scene is unrealistic enough without the addition of the newbie being forced to shoot the prisoner. The final standoff is fraught with idiocies. Mainly the Germans refusing to use Panzerfausts. As far as the Tiger scene, I agree with your analysis, but let me throw in that the Tiger would have logically picked off the first tank, not the last one. But then, that was Brad Pitt's tank so we know why that bit of tactical logic was thrown out.

I am preparing a new review that will be much harsher. You should enjoy it. Let's forget the ending (what, a battalion of men couldn't approach a tank from the direction it's NOT shooting? sigh) And let's forget the murder of the SS soldier! (Yes, it's true that GI's would shoot SS soldiers if they tried to surrender after Malmedy, but shooting one that was already a prisoner in cold blood was so rare that I've never read a about a verified case.) Yeah...let's forget all of that.

The truth is from beginning to end I couldn't stand any of the characters. As an audience we're supposed to feel "some" empathy for "someone" in the cast. And I just...couldn't.

Also, I know that the tank on tank battle was staged for modern audiences, but a Tiger would never have come out to play tag. The tank would have remained where it was and picked off the Fury from a distance. Yeah, now I'm being too nit picky...

I ordered the DVD of this solely because of the tank angle and because I wanted to see the Tiger in a battle type setting. The first 1 1/2 hours was really excellent. But, then the Germans turned into idiots strait out of Hogan's Heroes. After losing about 100 men they finally decided that they should try to knock out the tank with a panzerfaust, but they couldn't even destroy the Sherman at point blank range. But when the crew got out of the tank to fire the 50 and 30 cals and the Germans couldn't hit them I stopped watching the movie. I wouldn't have been so pissed off if the whole movie was a piece of crap like Red Tails, but I liked the movie up till then.Ed Whitenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7201660899514011402.post-63734891889767726472015-01-17T01:26:49.462-06:002015-01-17T01:26:49.462-06:00great movie i have watched lot of movie of Brad Pi...great movie i have watched lot of movie of Brad Pitt but this movie has a very nice story and action ,solarmovieehttp://www.solarmoviee.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7201660899514011402.post-18002243514793781142015-01-09T20:34:09.605-06:002015-01-09T20:34:09.605-06:00Totally agree. The last part of the movie was outrageous, panzer grenadier units attacking an immobile tank without using panzerfaust....it just puts question in general movie goers minds as how German excelled in warfare when they could not even shoot straight.Debjyoti (DJ)https://www.blogger.com/profile/17105158376881037157noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7201660899514011402.post-6777747884655862572014-11-18T01:57:52.355-06:002014-11-18T01:57:52.355-06:00nice moviesnice moviesxmovies8http://xmovies8.co/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7201660899514011402.post-83524872904781255482014-10-19T09:18:13.275-05:002014-10-19T09:18:13.275-05:00Ayer has a tendency to be heavy-handed in his fore...Ayer has a tendency to be heavy-handed in his foreshadowing and in his advancing of his themes.
