I think it adds a bleak poignancy to the movie.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7201660899514011402.post-75110334959962542972014-02-27T06:05:26.475-06:002014-02-27T06:05:26.475-06:00Loved your review. I am relieved.
It surprises me that European critics don't defend it as Europe's answer to American war epics like SPR. And it is a worthy answer, in my opinion.War Movie Buffhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05999735218343872013noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7201660899514011402.post-47272481738694467702013-02-24T08:08:51.523-06:002013-02-24T08:08:51.523-06:00I'm not as keen on it as you are but, yes, cer...I'm not as keen on it as you are but, yes, certainly, it's a Top 100, even 50. The cinematography is stunning, the story is gripping, it's quite accurate. I was more annoyed by the romance than you were. I've seen such a lot of really weak modern movies recently that I much keener on it by now. I wonder what term you will come up with to describe movies like this. It will be interesting.
I don't really understand why it was criticized so much. Because the European public/critics are much harsher with big productions than the US. It's a tendency I've seen many times. When it's too entertaining it's not acceptable or something like that. allaboutwarmovieshttp://allaboutwarmovies.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7201660899514011402.post-62416231597264296972013-02-23T12:44:26.791-06:002013-02-23T12:44:26.791-06:00It's nice to know that it is not just me and 1...It's nice to know that it is not just me and 14 year old boys that like the movie.

I am not sure it is completely accurate to say there was no duel. What has been questioned is whether Zaitsev was dueling with the head of a sniper school. There apparently was a duel, but it may have just been a generic sniper duel.War Movie Buffhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05999735218343872013noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7201660899514011402.post-77836827895977253872013-02-22T22:03:32.752-06:002013-02-22T22:03:32.752-06:00I am with you. The romance fit the plot, instead of distracting from the story like most romances in war movies. I am surprised that the duel never happened though, I remember reading about it in high school.historyonfilmhttp://www.historyonfilm.comnoreply@blogger.com
