He ruins the film by making a mockery of Christianity. PS: I object to "all white" cast: Karloff's race was Brown! He was 50% Indian and pretty much had the full-blown appearance when they weren't dousing his face with white grease paint & roach powder (per Cynthia Lyndsay's book, his self-proclaimed best friend!) Look at him in color films like The Sorcerers. That is not white skin nor European appearance in the least. He wasn't European. This is important because Boris Karloff was very racist against notably Whites (again, as told by himself & his BFF Lyndsay) but it's also one of the many lies told by and about Boris Karloff. I wonder if someone some day will publish the Untold Truth About Boris Karloff. I think I'll go google that now! ;)Irene D.https://www.blogger.com/profile/03751528206356555417noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7201660899514011402.post-55321662003523551702014-02-25T20:26:35.629-06:002014-02-25T20:26:35.629-06:00I respect your opinion, as usual. While the sergeant made some silly mistakes, the British did have horrible trouble with the Arab tribesmen in Mesopotamia during WWI, and patrols did often get lost in the desert.historyonfilmhttp://www.historyonfilm.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7201660899514011402.post-10175740097338495212014-02-22T10:09:47.328-06:002014-02-22T10:09:47.328-06:00So true. Of course you could use gallons for the climactic machine gun slaughtering by the last survivor.the war movie buffnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7201660899514011402.post-59586183461018818912014-02-21T23:24:55.102-06:002014-02-21T23:24:55.102-06:00If Peckinpah had made or remade it, there would ha...If Peckinpah had made or remade it, there would have been enough blood and gore for two or three Hammer horror movies. And half of it in slow motion. And then some critics would have denounced it as gore porn, while others (speaking of the emperor's new clothes) would have praised it as the work of a genius.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7201660899514011402.post-39013051238505443262014-02-21T21:44:28.825-06:002014-02-21T21:44:28.825-06:00Agree. There certainly would not have been bloodless deaths if he had remade it. Actually, it was remade in various lost patrol movies over the years. Most recently in "Lone Survivor".War Movie Buffhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05999735218343872013noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7201660899514011402.post-9086930614697156722014-02-21T10:11:53.292-06:002014-02-21T10:11:53.292-06:00Well, it could have been worse. If it had been made in the 1960s and Sam Peckinpah had been the director, it would have been four hours long and the cost overruns would have driven the studio into bankruptcy. And I think Karloff's overacting was excusable, since his character was stark raving mad. I don't know if there is a way to be subtle when playing someone who is bonkers. I don't consider it a bad movie, just a routine and unremarkable little action/suspense/drama. I don't understand its reputation (among film critics, anyway) as a masterpiece. Maybe it's just an "emperor's new clothes" party line that anything directed by John Ford in the 1930's must be Great Art. Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
