The over shots show just red coated infantry. The film misses out on not showing more infantry combat. Close range firing and volleys would have enhanced its detail. Especially in the early scenes where Jack Hawkins ( Picton) is shown getting killed. There was a lot of close quarter firing at that point which could have been shown between D'erlon's I Corps attack and Picton's troops. Yes, also would have been nice to see troops reloading, but most films fall short on this detail. The Prussians get short changed for sure. I think trying to show all the details involved in one of the pivitol battles of modern history is a tall order for any 2 hour film to attempt. Waterloo makes a gallant try! Perhaps it was just a Forelorn Hope. You can see from the "version" available where it does "jump" over missing scenes, especially going to the scene of Blucher straight after the battle of Ligny, leaving the viewers (who haven't read about the campaign) scratching their heads. Also Steiger's performance is a big plus for the movie and, of course, Red Coats beating up on the French is always entertaining. I like both, but Gettysburg is superior in every area - acting, accuracy, realism, story (based on a Pulitzer Prize winner), etc.

I do not think the fact that it is not American has anything to do with it being left off. Waterloo did not do well critically or in box office when it was released. I think critics in general have been overly harsh. The Military History panel was too heavily influenced by regular movie critics which possibly explains some of its questionable selections.

P.S. I think this is by far the superior movie but then again, I grew up with this story/history while Gettysburg is closer to home for you.
