As far as the movie's attitude, I do believe that at the time it was made, it seems awkward that it would seem to support the "Lost Cause" narrative when that attitude was not even popular in the South any more. It just seems like an antique. It also seems like it was made to balance Gettysburg, the biggest Southern loss, with a movie that has a "happy ending". I do think we need more balance in our historical movies, but you can't expect Hollywood to make movies that are box office poison, like this movie was. As for being told from a "southern" point of view, I say so what? This is probably one of the last movies that will have the balls to do so.Think we'll ever see a movie that shows both Grant & Sherman expelling Jewish suttlers from the western theater because of being involved in black market cotton speculation? (Those pesky greedy Jews!). Will we see Grant in the pre war years working his wife's slave? Old honest Abe may have been a life long opponent of slavery but he never thought slaves were his equals, would never allowed a Black American to serve as his law partner (He couldn't have since Illinois severely restricted settlement of Blacks within it's borders).
From the dozens of original letter's that I have examined, most southern soldier's went to war because their states were seen to be being invaded by outsiders. As for "Yankees" being "barbarians", if they had burned down your home, after looting it, & having stolen or shot your livestock, as they did my GGGreat Grandparents home, (people who owned no slaves), then yeah I can probably see where those folks may have thought that. And yes Confederates looted as well, Kentucky, Gettysburg.
As for inviting my African American friends over to watch, I'll just refer to them the upcoming Spike Lee films Shiloh & Battle of the Wilderness. I'm sure they'll get much more satisfaction from a WOKE production. Them pesky old Johnny Rebs! Ooooohhhh!
I am a southerner born & bred, went to school in the deep, deep, south (Northern Florida) was taught mainly by older teachers from the south who grew up in the 30s & 40s, & yet whenever it came to the subject of the CW, I can't remember once, not once any teacher instructing that "the south was right". No one ever mentioned "The Lost Cause", let alone try to sway anyone to that way of thinking. Just the opposite, we were taught that the war was fought to free the slaves, & I must emphasize, this at a time when people like George Wallace were popular, schools had only been de-segregated for about 15 yrs.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7201660899514011402.post-65210201811004571862021-09-11T11:44:56.688-05:002021-09-11T11:44:56.688-05:00It's amazing to me that no ones made a film ab...It's amazing to me that no ones made a film about the Battle Of Antietam, the bloodiest day in American history. If you could have a film that depicts realistic violence, like say "Saving Private Ryan", but with Civil War era ordnance, coupled with just plain good writing, & STRIVE to leave politics, Wokeness, PC et al, out, not try & please everybody, just spin a good yarn you might just have a winning combination for a fine film. Give folks a feel for just how terrible this era in warfare was.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7201660899514011402.post-38283963124173530042019-10-05T20:45:40.448-05:002019-10-05T20:45:40.448-05:00The Civil War needs its Band of Brothers. We're probably close to a point where the various battlefields and regions affected by the war could be made to look realistic at a modest cost. But it would be nice to see a film that showed Western as well as Eastern soldiers, and maybe some scenes of the two groups meeting each other, such as during the siege of Chattanoga.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7201660899514011402.post-29758738434170781192018-02-18T08:15:18.248-06:002018-02-18T08:15:18.248-06:00You are asking for a lot considering how rare Civi...You are asking for a lot considering how rare Civil War movies are, unfortunately.
War Movie Buffhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05999735218343872013noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7201660899514011402.post-64372833331942656962018-02-11T17:06:08.908-06:002018-02-11T17:06:08.908-06:00I’d like to see a movie about the western Yankees ...I’d like to see a movie about the western Yankees of the Army of the Tennessee and Army of the Cumberland. While the movie suffers when compared to the great film 'Gettysburg', especially in regards with the film score, I don't think the movie was that bad. I didn't care for it when I saw the film in the theater, but the director's cut is a big improvement. However, the movie does come to a complete stop whenever Jackson's wife shows up.

I don't let the fact that the Confederates were on the wrong side diminish my respect for their bravery and belief in their cause. I see it as the same for wanting the German sailors in 'Das Boot' to survive even though they were fighting for an evil cause. Almost walked out when it showed at the theater. You hit all the low points of this pablum piece. I really enjoyed Lang's performance but the rest of the cast seemed so tired and they even reused battle scenes over in the space of 3 mins. The soundtrack was ok.
