Sergeant: I believe God is a sadist, but probably doesn't even know it.
It all started with a script by Michael Alan Eddy called “West of the Rising Sun”. The script was influenced by the story of Jules Brunet, a French army captain who fought in the Boshin War which was a civil war in which the Tokugawa Shogunate battled reactionaries who wanted to return power to the imperial government during the Meiji Restoration. There was also Frederick Ward, who was an American mercenary who trained a Chinese army that fought in the Taiping Rebellion. There were 500 extras for the final battle scene. 250 sets of armor were recreated. The movie was filmed in America, Japan, and New Zealand. It made over $345 million with a budget of $140 million. It was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor, Art Direction, Costume Design, and Sound.
