PICTURE, QUOTE, MOVIE #26

WHAT MOVIE IS THIS QUOTE FROM?  "This is the paradox of being a good soldier: To be a good soldier you must love the army, but you must be willing to kill the thing you love."

WHAT MOVIE IS THIS?   The movie is loosely based on the writer/director Samuel Fuller’s experiences with the 1st Division in WWII. The character Zab represents Fuller. The movie was released in 1980 with a substantial amount left on the cutting room floor. In 2004, the director’s cut was released almost doubling the length of the film.  The movie stars a veteran of WWII.  He served in the Marines and was wounded at Saipan.

    3. The Big Red One starring Lee Marvin and Mark Hamill. Despite some A-list cast members and a decent budget, this is definitely not a film I would recommend anyone acquire or spend any time watching. I found it unsatisfying in the extreme and definitely not worthy of being associated in any way with the unit whose WW2 battle record it purportedly depicts.

    1. I agree. I like Fuller's other war films, The Steel Helmet, Fixed Bayonets, even China Gate and Run of the Arrow, but that one misses.

I once knew a book publisher who specialized in military histories. He called The Big Red One "a lousy movie."
