PICTURE, QUOTE, MOVIE #83

1.  What movie is the picture from?

2.  What movie is this quote from?

“He better be worth it. He better go home and cure a disease, or invent a longer-lasting light bulb.”

3.  What movie is this?

It is based on the acclaimed novel by James Jones .  The film marked the return of its legendary director after a twenty year hiatus.  Many A-list actors were interested in being directed by him in whatever movie he made his comeback with.  In fact, several major actors worked on the movie and were left on the cutting room floor ( e.g. Billy Bob Thornton, Martin Sheen, Gary Oldman ).  The movie did not do well at the box office, but did garner seven Oscar nominations ( including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Cinematography ).  It won none.

PICTURE, MOVIE, QUOTE #28

1.  What movie is the picture from?
2.  What movie is this quote from?
"Bob, I got a bad feeling on this one, all right? I mean I got a bad feeling! I don't think I'm gonna make it outta here!"
3.  What movie is this?
It is the rare war movie made during a war that is not laughably propagandistic and unrealistic. In fact, it was probably the first American-made realistic war movie to come out during WWII. It helps that it was true to its source. The film is based on the famous book by war correspondent Richard Tregaskis. The producers expressed their appreciation for the Marines, Army, Navy, and Coast Guard, but the movie is dominated by the Marines. The credits are backed by the Marine Corps Hymn. The movie stars many recognizable faces including Richard Jaeckel in his first role

PICTURE, QUOTE, MOVIE #26

WHAT MOVIE IS THIS QUOTE FROM?  "This is the paradox of being a good soldier: To be a good soldier you must love the army, but you must be willing to kill the thing you love."

WHAT MOVIE IS THIS?   The movie is loosely based on the writer/director Samuel Fuller’s experiences with the 1st Division in WWII. The character Zab represents Fuller. The movie was released in 1980 with a substantial amount left on the cutting room floor. In 2004, the director’s cut was released almost doubling the length of the film.  The movie stars a veteran of WWII.  He served in the Marines and was wounded at Saipan.

PICTURE, MOVIE, QUOTE #20

WHAT MOVIE?  It is a biopic of the last years in the life of a famous German general. The movie was controversial because coming only six years after the war, it’s sympathetic portrayal of an enemy commander was greeted with anger by some critics and a number of veterans. One theory that has surfaced to explain the positive spin is the U.S. was in the Cold War and there was a need to show that there were good Germans. Interestingly, because of the criticisms, the same actors portrayal of the character several years later is less sympathetic.

#16 - Picture, Quote, Movie

"Vodka is a luxury we have. Caviar is a luxury we have. Time is not."

What movie?  It was released in 1964 at the height of the Cold War. The director was the esteemed Stanley Kubrick using a screenplay adapting the thriller Red Alert . The movie was originally meant to be serious, but Kubrick transformed it into a black comedy. The U.S. Air Force did not cooperate with the production because of the screenplay.

#15 - Picture, Quote, Movie

QUOTE:  "Very pretty.....but can they fight?"

WHAT MOVIE?  It is a political thriller released in 1962 during the Cuban Missile Crisis which is appropriate because it taps into the Red Scare hysteria of that time. It is based on a novel by Richard Condon and is faithful to the book. It was directed by John Frankenheimer and showcases his style of unusual camera angles and symbolism (notice all the images of Lincoln). The movie was supposedly taken out of circulation because of its proximity to the Kennedy assassination. There is also the possibility that Oswald saw the film and was inspired by it.

#14 - Picture, Quote, Movie

"The horror. The horror."

What movie?  It was directed by Alfred Hitchcock and was only his second American production (after “Rebecca”) and was released in 1940. The film has an incredible 14 writers which can be explained by the desire to keep up with current events during the filming. It was a critical and box office success. It was nominated for 6 Academy Awards including Best Picture (ironically, it lost to “Rebecca”), but won none. The events and characters are fictitious, but obviously Hitchcock meant it as a commentary on the storm clouds rising in Europe. It was dedicated to “those forthright ones who early saw the clouds of war while many of us at home were seeing rainbows…”

Picture, Quote, Movie #11

"I don't have to tell you the story. You already know it. Only two kinds of people are gonna stay on this beach: those that are already dead and those that are going to die. Now get off your butts. You guys are the fighting 29th".

What movie is this?  It has taken 59 years to update this movie.  And if he were alive today, John Mills would have starred in both.

Picture, Quote, Movie #8

“Are you quitting on me? Well, are you? Then quit, you slimy fucking walrus-looking piece of sh-t! Get the f–k off of my obstacle! Get the f–k down off of my obstacle! NOW! MOVE IT! Or I’m going to rip your balls off, so you cannot contaminate the rest of the world! I will motivate you, Private Pyle, IF IT SHORT-D–KS EVERY CANNIBAL ON THE CONGO!”

MOVIE?  This movie has a lame subplot of a Navy aviator  who is in love with a Nisei who is interned.
